Victoria Secures Federal Funds to Boost Housing Infrastructure
Relief is on the horizon for Victorian developers and councils as the Federal Government announces additional infrastructure funding for the state.
The funding, provided through the $1.5 billion Housing Support Program, aims to cover the cost of essential infrastructure needed to enable medium and high-density housing in targeted areas.
Addressing Infrastructure Challenges
The high costs associated with installing roads, sewerage, and water connections have made some projects financially unfeasible for developers or too costly for councils to undertake alone. As a result, many housing projects in high-demand areas have stalled.
Under the first round of funding, $248 million will be allocated to accelerate the construction of 3,781 homes across Victoria. The funding will go towards essential services such as:
- Road networks to improve accessibility.
- Sewerage and water connections to support urban expansion.
- Social housing initiatives to address affordability concerns.
Knoxfield Development and Regional Investment
A portion of the funding—$4.5 million—will be directed towards a new signal intersection and left-turn lane access from Burwood Highway at Knoxfield, improving transport connectivity for the area and its 400 new homes.
Additionally, more than $88 million will be dedicated to social housing and infrastructure projects across regional Victoria, supporting balanced development outside metropolitan areas.
First Nations Housing and Future Growth
As part of Victoria’s Big Housing Build commitment, at least 10% of the funding will be allocated to First Nations housing outcomes, ensuring more equitable housing opportunities.
With this funding injection, Victoria aims to fast-track much-needed housing projects, creating more livable communities while addressing affordability and population growth challenges.
